DUI charges filed after teen allegedly steals, wrecks vehicle

The effects of a criminal conviction at a young age can be devastating. Criminal records may follow young people in Colorado for years, making it difficult for them to establish a strong foundation for their futures. This is especially true when facing serious charges such as DUI and motor vehicle theft.

Police claim that an early morning accident led the arrest of a teenager. At the time of the accident the 18-year-old teen was apparently driving an SUV that police later identified as stolen. Two passengers were also riding in the SUV when the force of the collision tossed both of them out. It is not clear if they suffered any major injuries, but both the passengers and the driver were assessed and labeled in stable condition.

Only the driver was arrested, and is facing charges for drinking and driving, vehicular assault and aggravated motor vehicle theft. It is not clear how authorities determined that the driver was intoxicated at the time of the wreck. However, field sobriety tests, Breathalyzers and blood draws are all common methods.

Colorado defendants charged with DUI or other serious allegations face potential jail time, hefty fines and a criminal record that may prevent them from pursuing their preferred employment options. A strong criminal defense foundation can help these individuals reach the best possible outcome for their unique situations. For some, this means entering into a plea deal with the prosecution, which can yield lesser charges and/or favorable sentencing considerations. Others find better results from fighting the charges throughout the entirety of trial court proceedings.
