There are likely hundreds of people in Colorado needing the advice of a criminal defense lawyer this week. The Colorado Department of Transportation continued its campaign called the "Heat is On" this past Memorial Day weekend. Authorities all over Colorado participate in the campaign in hope to reduce the number of DUI-related fatalities. The campaign occurs off and on year-round during periods of anticipated increased drunk driving.
Statistically in Colorado, one out of every three crash fatalities involves an impaired driver. In May 2017, that number was increased with almost half of all fatalities involving a driver who was impaired. The warmer weather, summer parties, graduations and other season celebrations often increase the amount of consuming substances that may result in impairment. Last year over 300 people found themselves arrested for impaired driving following Memorial Day weekend.
People who may have been arrested this week may have been stopped by extra patrol vehicles and sobriety checkpoints. In order to remain safe this summer, authorities encourage drivers to buckle up, drive sober and report suspected drunk driving. In addition, it is always wise and safe to avoid driving distracted.
A DUI is a serious criminal charge, but there are various degrees of DUIs depending on the circumstances. A DUI involving a collision with property damage, injuries or death of others typically is handled with more severity than a DUI charge with no collision or harm to others involved. No matter the circumstances, a skilled Colorado criminal defense attorney can be an asset throughout the entire defense process.
